Czar Nicholas II of Russia

Czar Nicholas II, 1912. Bain Collection, Library of Congress.

This footage shows the last czar (or tsar) of Russia, Nicholas II, as he mounts a horse and departs. Nicholas (1868-1918) reigned over a period of rapid change and growing public dissatisfaction in Russia. Military losses, famine, and political crackdowns all stoked resentment against the czar and his family. When revolutionaries overthrew the monarchy in 1917, Nicholas and most of the remaining Romanov dynasty were imprisoned. He was then executed by the Bolsheviks in 1918.
