When Shakespear’s Hamlet avenged his father and spoke to skulls, he did so within the walls of Denmark’s Kronborg Castle. Located on a strategic sound between Sweden and Denmark, the castle was an important source of both wealth and security for the Danish monarchy. It has been home to a castle since the 1420s, but the modern structure was built in the early 1600s. Kronborg Castle offered its occupants opulence and strong defensive measures, gradually improved over time. Today, it instead serves as a museum for fans of history, Shakespeare, and elegant interiors alike.

Because of all these factors, Kronborg is now protected as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. If you want to learn more, this UNESCO video tours Kronborg Castle and explains its significance in Danish history.
