These two videos, one shot in 1903 and the other in 1906, show what a day at Ellis Island may have been like for immigrants coming to the United States. The first, from Thomas Edison’s studio, shows immigrants from multiple European nations disembarking at Ellis Island. The second, set a few years later, shows new citizens waiting to leave the island and then a stream of new arrivals headed for the main depot.
Ellis Island remained in operation from 1892 to 1954 and saw some 12 million people walk through its doors. It is still open to the general public as part of the Statue of Liberty National Monument.
