The world is changing rapidly almost everywhere, including in the 22 nations that make up the Arab League. Increasing wealth, often but not always driven by global oil demand, has transformed many nations of the Arab World into thriving commercial and tourist hubs. This prosperity has also led to cultural shifts, most noticeably through a new generation of technologically savvy and internationally minded young women. Now, Arab families, communities, and nations face the question of how to adapt to a changing world while still respecting ancient traditions and social norms.

This video from the Library of Congress features speaker Judith Hornok as she describes this new generation of Arab women and their increasing visibility in the world. While refusing to generalize, she provides a clear look into the new challenges and opportunities women face with specific examples. Her talk offers a hopeful and inspiring message of increasing freedoms for women without needing to abandon their religious and cultural heritage.
