Perhaps the most popular traditional dance of Peru, Marinera is a Spanish- and native-Andean-inspired dance that captures the sweeping rush of courtship. While performing, a male and female dancer, armed with handkerchiefs and a hat, whirl together and apart again. Marinera is the major national dance of Peru, and couples attend academies and compete against each other all across the country. There are several different schools of the dance with different forms and outfits. Sometimes, male dancers even participates on horseback, with the horse doing most of the fancy footwork.
This video from the Library of Congress features Marinera Viva, a group of performers led by Peruvian singer and dancer Julie Freundt. Multiple couples demonstrate Marinera at its finest, enjoy!
