For the nomadic people who still travel across the vast steppes of Mongolia, or live on the outskirts of its cities, the ger is more than just portable shelter—it’s home. Families take pride in their ger, decorating them with intricate, colorful artwork and crafting them from the best materials. The end result is a beautiful, comfortable, and lightweight home that can be assembled and taken apart within just a few hours. No wonder, then, that yurt building has found a growing global following. But nowhere is the art of ger construction perfected like its homelands on the Eurasian steppes.
This video, courtesy of UNESCO, walks through the entire process of fabricating a new ger. From the wooden lattices, support beams, and felt fabric to the painted patterns and carvings adorning them, each step is shown and explained. It’s a fascinating insight into another way of life still practiced today. As a more eco-friendly, inexpensive, and flexible home than typical buildings, we can admire both the beauty of a ger and the lessons it can teach.
