Outside of the New Testament, few historical documents have survived to record the earliest days of Christianity. Because of this, sorting through conflicting accounts and determining certain times and dates has long been a challenge for biblical scholars. So how reliable are the Gospels, and how can we use them to piece together a reasonably accurate picture of what took place around the lives of Jesus Christ and his disciples?
In this lecture from Yale Open Courses, Professor Dale B. Martin examines biblical historicity through multiple accounts of Paul, or Saul, and his travels spreading the new faith of Christianity. While acknowledging that there will probably always be a degree of uncertainty to these stories, he walks through the process of dissecting both Paul’s narrative as well as that of Acts, which provide two different stories of his journeys. Which should you believe? You may need to decide the answer for yourself.
