Traditionally regarded as the most important book of the New Testament, Matthew was written at a time when Christian communities were beginning to distance themselves from Jewish ones under the Roman Empire. Matthew therefore emphasizes the divinity of Christ, his lineage, and the miracles he performed, primarily intended for a Jewish audience. Matthew is the source for many popular narratives and stories surrounding Jesus, including one of the most detailed accounts of his resurrection. The book ends with the resurrected Jesus, speaking to his followers in Galilee and instructing them to spread his message to the world.
