The modern sport of archery was born out of much older traditions using the bow for hunting and warfare. In most parts of the world, what was once a tool of life and death is now simply an athletic pursuit. But in places like Turkey, where archery once featured prominently in warfare traditions, the sport is more than just a way to exercise; it’s also a way to connect with the past and keep ancestral skills alive.

Both men and women practice archery in Turkey, either on the ground or from horseback. For many people, the sport also includes the art of craftsmanship through the making and maintenance of bows and arrows. While traditional methods are encouraged, the sport has also produced successful international competitors, including several World Cup winners. Turkish archery is a fast-paced and elegant sport that preserves the heritage of the Turkish nomads and Ottoman Empire.
