Horezu is a relatively small city in Oltenia, Romania, with about 6,000 residents living near the beautiful Horezu Monastery. Despite its size, the town is known throughout the world for the fine ceramics its artisans produce. Hand-made Horezu ceramics are famous for their bright patterns and quality finish. Where so many traditional craft industries have either disappeared or transitioned to mass production, Horezu ceramics are still prepared in the old-fashioned way. In most cases, men handle the initial work of collecting suitable clay before preparing and shaping it into a vessel. Traditionally, women then take over the final stages of glazing and decoration, following established patterns with their own creative flourish. The final result is an intricate, unique piece of pottery made using the same techniques for countless generations.
This video, courtesy of UNESCO, details the process of creating Horezu ceramics within the town itself. It not only shows the steps followed by craftsmen, but also explores their stories, individual artistry, and the community pride that keeps the tradition going. Watch to learn more about this custom, the beautiful pottery it produces, and the people who work each day to preserve a way of life.
Note that the video itself is narrated in French, but subtitles in English and other languages are available.
