There are so many artists with links to the Kikuchi Family. My mother, Betty Kikuchi James, was grand auntie of this young artist, Yoko Oji Kikuchi aka Yoko OK. The video below is one of Yoko’s first explorations into video editing and production.

Comments from Yoko OK

I made this documentary (which will eventually expand into a longer piece) for my final project for Advanced Video Editing at Community College of San Francisco, Spring 2020. Through a series of interviews with members of my family, I explore the origin story of the Kikuchi family immigration, the impact that COVID-19 has had on us as Asians in America during the pandemic, and our reasons for wanting to make a family “pilgrimage” to the island of Hachijo where our great-grandfather was raised.

Interviewees: Robert Kikuchi-Yngojo, Jesse Kikuchi Gates, Danny Alyce Satow, Maikiko James and Walter Kikuchi. Koto Music (2009) by Hyo-shin Na
