Britain gives a Curry Capital award each year to a certain location for its exceptional Indian food. Glasgow has won multiple times so I was very excited to try some of their restaurants. Mister Singh’s was within walking distance of the flat and it was highly recommended by the locals, I decided to give it a try. The food was very authentic and interesting. Some items I had never eaten or even seen before..I learned that Papadum is a very thin flat bread that is crisped and puffed up by a quick dip in hot oil. Topped with a mango chutney, Indian raita or spiced onions. It was so light and delicious.

Traditional naan bread, warm and freshly made..

Pakora was new to me so I ordered the chicken and the vegetable. Pakora is an Indian fritter. Chickpea flour and spices are used for the batter. The flavor profile changes based on the filling, which I find amazing. Chicken pakora has a totally different taste and color than veggie pakora because of the spices used in the batter!! There are so many types of pakora to try and I love them all so far : )

The vegetable pakora is usually just a mix of what is seasonally available..

There are stories of chicken tikka masala being invented in Glasgow. They say, a chef in the 1970s added some tomato cream sauce to his chicken tikka and chicken tikka masala was born. Claims of customers returning and bringing their friends to try the new dish, even a request to Parliament to recognize Glasgow as the location where it was invented..whether it was created here or not, I had to eat some.

I was also very excited to try the Mutton Matka, I had never eaten mutton and wanted to give it a try. It was a bit gamey for me but very tender and rich.

For dessert, Gulab Jamun. This was new to me and I found it to be intensely sweet in the best way. With a hint of cardamom and rose and the taste of sweet milk, they melt in your mouth and are pure sweet goodness. Gulab Jamun is a fried dough soaked in a sugar syrup. Sticky and warm and constantly cravable.

I loved my time at Mister Singh’s India in Glasgow. I ate amazing food, chatted with friendly staff and learned so many new things. I have found an Indian food restaurant in my hometown so I can get a few of my new favorite things but I can’t wait to go back to Glasgow and visit Mister Singh’s again. It was a palate changing experience : )
