Meet the James Gang - Andre, Terri, Lisbeth, Aleta, Michael, Martin and Leslie
The James Gang
From 1953 to the mid 70’s Bette and Charles James raised seven kids in the San Francisco Bay Area. Bette, a second generation Japanese American and Charles, an African, Irish Indian American rented an apartment in the Western Addition (Black District) of San Francisco. Over the years we lived in different neighborhoods, based on where they were accepted. As a mixed race couple the James family was limited to housing options. At one point our Charles put on a Hawaiian shirt and applied and was accepted for housing on Leavenworth and Jackson, just above the Chinatown district.
